What No One Tells You Before Going to Art Basel Miami
Walk down Collins Ave on a December Tuesday and you'll see people in suits worth more than a used car. But behind all that glam, there's a secret few know. Shall we tell you?
Art Basel Miami Beach, from December 2nd to 6th, at the Miami Beach Convention Center, costs about the same as an Uber from Wynwood on a Saturday at 3:22 am. Is it worth it? Well, that depends on how much you like art... and people in extravagant hats.
Here's what no one mentions: this event is like a movie, where everyone plays a role. Serious collector? There's one, inspecting every piece with eagle eyes. But right next to them, you'll find someone with a mojito in hand, unable to tell a Picasso from a beach poster.
And Art Basel isn't just for the art experts. But do you know where the real magic happens? In the streets, at those satellite events, where you might stumble upon an installation that leaves you thinking for days.
And there's something else: the café on the corner of Lincoln Road. Everyone talks about it, but few know there's a local DJ spinning right next to the espresso machine. A surprise? Totally, I was wrong to think I'd only see art on walls.
But what really makes Art Basel special? Maybe the chance to see 47 people marvel at a sculpture that doesn't even seem finished.
So, are you daring enough to explore beyond the convention center? Or do you prefer to stay in the safety of 'official' art? The choice is yours, but I warn you, the best stories begin in unexpected places. Where will you be when the real show starts?
